The International Brigades – Numbers by Nationality

September 18, 2010

Listed below are the nations that sent volunteers and the number.  Exact numbers may never be known but a reasonable estimate should be possible.  One of the main issues is many volunteers are double counted.  Many volunteers came from exile and are often counted both by their native and host countries.  Also,  individuals who served in the militias, especially early in the war, have little documentation.

Update 18 September 2010

September 18, 2010

I have not added content to the blog for some time due to other obligations.  I am still working away in the background however and am looking at adding a listing of the various nationalities that served in both in the International Brigades, the People’s Army and militias.

I am also going back in and entering data from the Cadre list.  I had thought I included the information but found that I had only added it for some volunteers.  This has already resulted in my moving three unconfirmed volunteers over to Cat I.
